An estimated one of every five American women has been abused, but few are talking about it. Our culture recognizes instances in which the abuse has been extreme (as in the movies Gaslight and The Burning Bed), but focusing only on the extreme may skew our perspectives and lead victims to conclude that the violence "isn't so bad." Lacking any other reference, friends and family may reinforce this--or not say anything at all. And many women stay in dangerous relationships, sometimes until it is too late.
But you can make a difference. Knowledge is power. Learn what it is. Read survivor's stories. Get information for victims or their family and friends. Read our newsletter, ask questions on our bulletin board or find books about domestic violence.
Follow the links; become informed. You just might save a life. |
